On the 26th of July 1939, a fleet of 15 aircraft was flying between Belfast in Northern Ireland and the former RAF Abbotsinch airfield (now the site of Glasgow Airport) in Scotland.
At the time of the flight, the weather conditions were poor and viability was limited. Due to this, the aircraft was given instructions to break formation and continue the flight independently.
One aircraft, an Avro Anson (K6255) did not make it to Abbotsinch. A search was commenced and the wreckage was discovered.
In poor weather, the aircraft has struck terrain above the town of Greenock.
There were 4 crew members onboard the aircraft. One sadly died as a result of injuries sustained during the crash.
One of the engines was carried off the hillside and is placed as a memorial near the Greenock Cut Center.
