Royal Observer Corps (ROC) posts were located all across the United Kingdom during the cold war. They were designed to provide critical information in the event that the country was hit by a nuclear weapon. The monitoring posts were equipped with instruments that could determine the direction, power and altitude of any nuclear blast.
The combined data from a large number of monitoring posts could be used to produce very accurate data that would be needed in the aftermath of a nuclear attack on the UK.
The ROC monitoring post at Skelmorlie has been restored and guided tours are available. You can visit their website or call Frank Alexander on 07513 504115 to arrange a visit.
