Inverkip power station was an oil-fueled power station that opened at the worse possible time. On its completion oil prices were on the increase and the power station was mothballed pretty much from the start.
Inverkip power station was built in the 1970s and it only really saw operational service during the miners strikes. For the rest of its lifetime, it was a “strategic reserve”. It was maintained, but not in active use.
The site started to be disassembled in the late nineties when machinery was removed from the plant and trucked to other power stations. The chimney at Inverkip was one of the largest in Europe standing at over 700 ft tall. It was quite a local landmark until it was blown up in 2012.
Now there are very few structures left on the site, it is currently unclear what development will be allowed.
